Kiel Canal is now open again, after an oil spill had forced it to close just before Christmas, as the German authorities reported.

The German Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation published the accident report of the multi-purpose vessel ELSE, which sailed into a lock gate at Kiel Holtenau on the Kiel Canal (NOK), on 29 August 2020.

Yesterday, a head-on collision of two general cargo ships resulted in closing Germany’s Kiel Canal to traffic.

Traffic dues for Kiel Canal will be suspended until the end of 2021, as a step by the Kiel-Canal Initiative to maintain the competitiveness of the canal.

According to the Itzehoe police department in Germany, a 1.380 TEU Cyprus-flagged containership collided in the large south lock of the Kiel Canal in the evening hours on 23 November.

The Antigua Barbuda-flagged general cargo ship 'BBC Amethyst' collided with a lock in the Kiel Canal in Kiel-Holtenau, Germany, in the early morning hours of Sunday, 7th April. The vessel was en route from Norrköping, Sweden to Rotterdam, Netherlands.

The Liberia-flagged 'Calisto' was approaching Brunsbuettel for further Kiel Canal transit when it experienced rudder issues. These made the ship go off course and subsequently collide with the quay of the Elbe Port in Brunsbüttel. No one was injured due to the incident, according to the German water police. The ship was capable of sailing on its own power, while no oil spill has been reported either.

The car carrier "City of Amsterdam" collided with container ship "Conmar Bay" in the Kiel Canal at Breiholz in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany during the westbound transit, on April 22. Unfortunatelly the ships were unable to prevent the accident. However, no injuries reported.

On October 2013, the Dutch-registered LPG tanker CORAL IVORY and the cargo ship SIDERFLY, flying the flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, collided in the Kiel Canal west of the viaduct at Brunsbuttel.

Hamburg Port Authority called for the reconstruction without delay of the fifth lock chamber along the Kiel Canal and the renovation of the two existing large lock chambers at Brunsbüttel.
