Ports of Stockholm, Hutchison Ports Stockholm, Mälarhamnar and Wallenius Marine have teamed up to launch inland shipping between Stockholm Norvik Port and the strategically positioned Mälarhamnar ports of Västerås and Köping.

The European Commission has awarded 0.5 million euros in funding for further research to the RH2INE partnership. The project regards the transport of cargo with hydrogen-powered inland vessels along the freight corridor between Rotterdam and Genoa.

The Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) and the European Barge Inspection Scheme (EBIS) announces the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to transition key elements of EBIS into OCIMF’s SIRE programme with the vision that a single barge inspection scheme within the inland European region will be achieved.

The AEGIS (Advanced, Efficient and Green Intermodal Systems), a three-year project funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme, has officially started on 1st June. 

Wärtsilä has joined a consortium to form Zero Emission Services B.V. (ZES), an enterprise aimed at making inland waterway shipping more sustainable. The other founders of ZES are ING Bank, energy and technical service provider Engie, and the Port of Rotterdam Authority. The concept is supported by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.

The Netherlands has initiated the NesecShipping Debt Fund, under which institutional investors and the Province of Groningen will offer financing for Dutch shipowners who are planning to acquire (or re-build) short-sea vessels.

The Electric Boat & Ship Association Greece (EBA Greece) announced that the first electric ferry boat in Greece is expected to launch in the near future, serving the Aigio - Agios Nikolaos (Doridos) route in the Gulf of Corinth, which has stopped operating since 2011.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has prepared an Action Plan for Coastal Shipping in September 2019, India's Minister of Shipping informed Thursday. This action plan includes recommendations for infrastructure creation required to increase the use of coastal shipping in India.

The Waste Cleaner 66, reported to be the world’s most powerful all-electric boat designed for cleaning up pollution in inland waterways and harbors, includes technology that enables it to collect up to 700 kg (1543 lb) of solid waste and 1,000L (263 gal) of liquid waste, including hydrocarbons.
