A new system currently being tested by Norway's Environmental Agency in the Akers river in Oslo seeks to tackle waste pollution issues in rivers.  Key pollution sources for rivers are domestic wastes from households and sewage, as well as disposal of plastic bags, plastic objects and solid wastes.

The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) has commissioned hydrographic surveys in the Vuoksi river system in eastern Finland to make navigation safer in the region. The work will be partly carried out by airborne surveys.

During a green inland shipping event that took place on 16 October, five innovative vessels called at the Port of Brussels to show technological solutions for cutting CO2 and air emissions to a minimum. These included zero-emission technologies, such as battery-electric, gas-electric, ultra clean biofuel power drive-trains and hydrogen. 

On 12 September, the Indian Prime Minister inaugurated India’s second riverine Multi Modal terminal, built at Sahibganj in Jharkhand, in the eastern part of the country. Built within a record time of two years, this is the second of the three Multi Modal Terminals on river Ganga under Jal Marg Vikas Project. 

ESPO submitted its proposals regarding the European Commission's review of the TEN-T Regulation 1315/2013 which kick started before summer. ESPO believes the new TEN-T guidelines should be adapted to recognise the role many seaports are playing in the field of energy and digitalization over their classical role.

In early August, Missouri Port Authorities collaborated to discuss a plan for statewide initiative that focuses on innovative inland waterway container-on-vessel freight service. The gathering focused on finding additional options to transport freight along the inland waterways and the how the existent waterway vessels could transport larger volumes of goods and commodities. 

The US National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) and Waterways Council, Inc. (WCI) today commended the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for releasing a significant new study that quantifies the cost-savings and competitive advantages that would increase investments in long-delayed improvements to inland waterways locks and dams on the Upper Mississippi and Illinois River system.

Indian shipping Minister Mansukh Mandaviya informed that the country aspires to begin the navigation in inland waterways and passenger transportation in the rivers in the North Eastern states of India. The company Water and Power Consultancy Services Limited (WAPCOS) is now preparing a model Detailed Project Report, in order to operate low-cost ferry services in the inland waterways in these states.

Turkey-based Tersan Shipyard is building two new LNG-fueled cruise vessels for Norwegian shipowner Havila Kystruten, expected to operate the historic coastal voyage between Bergen and Kirkenes, along the western coastline of Norway, stopping at 34 ports along the route.

In line with the Government's vision of promoting Inland Waterways, India inaugurated the first of its kind movement where an Indian inland waterways is being used for connecting two countries – landlocked Bhutan and Bangladesh.
