ITF's General Secretary, Stephen Cotton, speaking at the ILO's centenary conference in Geneva, highlighted that 'now is the time to assert authority as the global standard-bearer for labour rights.' ILO agreed a centenary declaration designed to give all workers a floor of rights and protections in an ever-changing world of work. 

The 2019 Trafficking in Persons report, was published by US Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo, focusing on government efforts to tackle human trafficking and highlights strategies to address this crime and protect the victims. This year’s report, the 19th installment, includes narratives for 187 countries and territories, including the U.S.

Oceana published an investigative report showcasing the power of technology to shed light on possible illegal fishing and human rights abuses at sea. Using the Global Fishing Watch mapping platform, Oceana analyzed the activities of vessels with histories of possible illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, forced labor or human trafficking.

Human Rights at Sea collaborated with the University of Bristol Law School Human Rights Implementation Centre and launched the second report 'An evaluation of Flag State Practice in Monitoring, Reporting and Enforcing Human Rights Obligations on Board Vessels', as part of a continuous study into the engagement, policies and remedies affected by flag States in relation to their duties to uphold human rights at sea.

Italian authorities have released the charity vessel 'Sea-Watch 3' Saturday, the German NGO Sea-Watch announced. The ship was impounded nearly three weeks ago, after rescuing several migrants in the Mediterranean off the coast of Libya. 

Human Rights at Sea highlighted that the remaining abandoned Indian seafarers are trying to negotiate their salaries, keeping in mind that their two vessels have been arrested, and most seafarers were in such a desperate situation that they accepted the company's offer without further negotiation.

The City of Geneva has formally endorsed the development of Geneva Declaration on Human Rights at Sea in a signing ceremony held at the Palace Eynard in Geneva between the Mayor of Geneva, Mr. Sami Kanaan, and the Founder of the British charity, Human Rights at Sea, Mr. David Hammond.

Maritime charity Sailors’ Society is petitioning the International Labour Organization (ILO) to make wellness training for seafarers mandatory in the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC). The petition is an important part of the charity’s Not On My Watch campaign to combat suicide and depression at sea. 

The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) informed that it initiated a targeted operation against German shipping company Johann M. K. Blumenthal, claiming that the company has refused to recognise seafarers' welfare and rights. This operation aims to make sure that the company's crews are paid properly, are adequately fed and that all of their rights are being granted.
