Port of Rotterdam along with DeltaPort Niederrheinhäfen and E.ON join their forces to encourage island shipping in Germany and Europe to turn from diesel to battery or hydrogen. In fact, both sides decided to develop a new infrastructure in which vessels can exchange battery containers or refuel hydrogen.

Vessel traffic at the Rhine River in Germany was delayed after construction workers defused an unexploded American bomb from World War II, as AP reports. When the bomb was found, a TV station and the opera house were evacuated during the defusing operation. Shipping on the river and air traffic overhead were also interrupted before the defusing operation got underway.

With water levels in Rhine continue dropping, shipping routes through the river are negatively affected. In fact, the whole falling water levels situation, reduced loading rates for vessels, as there is a prospect of higher transportation costs for cargo and materials.

Marking the second ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operation in Germany, the world’s largest LNG bunker vessel ‘Kairos’, has supplied DEME’s next generation offshore installation vessel ‘Orion’. For the Port of Rostock, this ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operation is a first.

Finland and Germany submitted a study to the IMO’s Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR) sub-committee, in order to be revised during its session scheduled for February. This document presents results of a measurement campaign for the analysis of the impact of fuel oil quality on Black Carbon emissions. The results indicate that new blends of marine fuels with 0.50% sulphur content can contain a large percentage of aromatic compounds, which have a direct impact on Black Carbon emissions.
