Collisions at sea: Why are they still happening?

During the last SAFETY4SEA Singapore Forum, Harry Hirst, Partner & Master Mariner, Ince & Co highlighted that in order to avoid a collision, a vessel must first detect and then observe and plot the approach of the other vessel so as to make a proper appraisal of the situation and risk of collision in order to be able to take timely and positive avoiding action. To allow time for a proper appraisal and effective avoiding action it is important also, that the vessel is proceeding at an appropriate – or safe - speed.

Dredger swamped fishing boat as skipper was on social media

On August 6, 2017, a scallop dredger sank and killed three of the four men onboard a small fishing boat off Shoreham, West Sussex, while its skipper was distracted by WhatsApp. On Monday December 2, a jury at Lewes Crown Court heard that David Brooks Marr was using his laptop computer and social media when he should have been on watch. BBC reports that the three men, aged 40, 41 and 50 drowned when seawater gushed into their boat.
