HD Hyundai Co. announced that it has joined hands with Shell in jointly developing technologies for liquefied hydrogen carriers.
Under a recently signed joint development agreement in Seongnam, South Korea, HD Hyundai’s two shipbuilding affiliates, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co. and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., will spearhead the project.
HD Korea Shipbuilding will concentrate on creating key technologies, such as large liquefied hydrogen tanks and hydrogen cargo handling systems. Simultaneously, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will be tasked with developing hydrogen engines and designing the liquefied hydrogen carriers.
Shell will carry out feasibility studies for the liquefied hydrogen carrier designs.
Together, the companies aim to develop a large-scale liquefied hydrogen carrier for commercial use by 2030, positioning themselves to capitalize on the emerging market for liquefied hydrogen maritime transport.
