The US Coast Guard has extended the Network’s and the 1-Call’s non-tank vessels’ APCs until 2021. The Network’s tanker APC approval was extended through 31 December 2018. Operators should be aware that the US Coast Guard has not approved the renewal of Alaska Response Corp APC, which expired on June 30, 2018.

The Alternative Compliance Procedure schemes operated in Alaska by both Alaska Maritime Prevention & Response Network and 1-Call Alaska have been given approval by the USCG to continue their operations until 2021, although the Network’s tanker APC has only been extended until the end of this year.

The proposed construction by Alaska Gas Development Corporation of a LNG pipeline and terminal in Cook Inlet, Alaska, could expose nearly half of the population of resident endangered beluga whales to dangerous levels of noise, according to Environmental Investigation Agency.

US-based Crowley Fuels LLC announced the signing of a contract with Bollinger Shipyards for construction of a new Alaska Class 100,000-barrel-capacity articulated tug-barge to transport multiple clean petroleum products in the Alaska market.

Italian oil producer Eni, through its subsidiary Eni US Operating Co Inc, started drilling a new well in US waters off the north coast of Alaska. BSEE approved the plan in July, making the oil and gas company the first one allowed to explore for oil in US waters off Alaska since 2015.

The State of Alaska approved ExxonMobil’s plan to engineer the expansion of the Point Thomson project on the North Slope, as state and company officials consider it a positive step to achieve major gas sales and increase oil production.

The European Climate Foundation has created an infographic which depicts potential dangers of the increased Arctic shipping activity  in the region. An oil spill can be proven catastrophic for the region, because of Arctic's sensitive environment.
