The South Korean Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced Korea’s plans to convert 140 state-owned vessels to run on environmentally friendly fuels by 2030, in line with their plans on boosting domestic and international environmental regulations.
As the IMO’s 2020 sulphur cap regulation is approaching, the Ministry stated that a part of the to-be-converted ships will be powered with LNG; This change will encompass units with a total of over 200 tonnes.
In the meantime, smaller vessels would be powered by electricity or hybrid propulsion.

Recently, South Korean shipbuilders announced that they will focus on the construction of LNG-powered vessels, adding that South Korean is planning to orders a total of 140 LNG fueled ships during the next six years from 2020 to 2025, with the ministry allocating US$2.31 million and US$7.01 million, in order to construct two LNG-fueled towing ships.
The Ministry further stated that air pollution reduction devices are to be installed to vessels that approach the end of their service life by 2030.
In early 2019, the South Korean Ocean Minister, Moon Seong-hyeok highlighted that he will focus on improving the country’s shipping industry and adopt new technologies to advance its capabilities.
