In light of the recent developments and representations made by various Libyan authorities, the Standard P&I Club issued a warning for ship operators reminding that the situation in Libya remains extremely unstable. All ports remain open with the exception of Sirte and Derna.
Since April 2019, the situation for Libyan ports is as follows:
-Working: Farwah, Bouri, Melittah, Zawia, Tripoli, Al Khoms, Misurata, Es Sider, Ras Lanuf, Marsa El Brega, Zuetina, Benghazi, Tobruk and Marsa El Hariga.
-Closed: Sirte and Derna.
Vessels should avoid the areas around Derna and Sirte. Our Correspondent recommends that when calling at the open ports, arrangements should be made well in advance in order that port agents can notify the appropriate authorities and complete the necessary formalities.
Libya has been torn by violence and division since 2011, when its long-time ruler Muammar Gaddafi was killed.
The country has also been at the centre of global criticism for inhumane conditions at its migrant detention centres.
Last week, an airstrike that killed 53 migrants made headlines, specially after reports that guards fired on migrants who tried to flee these airstrikes.
