Shell has filed a lawsuit against Greenpeace UK and Greenpeace International following a protest earlier this year.
According to Greenpeace, the legal action seeks to prevent Greenpeace from protesting at Shell’s infrastructure globally or face an $8.6 million damages claim and an injunction. The protest, in which activists occupied a moving oil platform, aimed to draw attention to the environmental impact of Shell’s activities.
According to the NGOs’ statement, Shell’s aggressive legal approach is seen by Greenpeace as an attempt to quash dissent against its fossil fuel investment.
The lawsuit stems from a 13-day protest where activists occupied Shell’s Penguins floating production unit. Shell initially claimed damages exceeding $120,000, but negotiations have led to a reduced settlement offer of $1.4 million and a protest ban.
Greenpeace has indicated willingness to accept the ban if Shell complies with a Netherlands court order to reduce emissions by 45% by 2030. Legal proceedings are ongoing, with Greenpeace awaiting the details of Shell’s claim.
