The Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs) and Tanzania’s Environment and Empowerment Movement (TEEMO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to advance the development of green hydrogen shipping fuel in Tanzania.
This collaboration aims to establish a sustainable maritime sector in Tanzania by focusing on green hydrogen production, bunkering infrastructure, and vessel development, with an emphasis on local training programs to build expertise. By harnessing Tanzania’s renewable energy potential and its strategic maritime location, the partnership aims to contribute to the global decarbonization of the shipping industry.
In addition to working with TEEMO, ZESTAs has partnered with a German organization with expertise in hydrogen project development to ensure successful project implementation in Tanzania. This partnership will focus on aligned communication and adherence to a strict timeline.
Madadh MacLaine, Secretary-General of ZESTAs, emphasized the importance of green hydrogen as the only truly zero-emission and pollution-free fuel for shipping, stating that this initiative would not only support environmental goals but also create economic opportunities in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As Madadh MacLaine had said to SAFETY4SEA during Posidonia 2024, if you picture a spider web, if you touch it, it reflects everywhere in that web, and it’s the same in shipping. What each one of us does impacts all of the others, and not only impacts others in shipping, but impacts the rest of humanity and, indeed, our environment and nature.
Under the terms of the MOU, ZESTAs will offer technical support and industry connections, while TEEMO will engage stakeholders on the ground, including government officials, logistics experts, and port authorities.
Winfrida Shonde of TEEMO expressed excitement about the partnership, noting that it aligns with their mission to protect the environment and empower communities through innovative, climate-resilient projects.
