The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) saw significant growth in container volume for fiscal year-to-date 2025 (July 1 – Dec. 31), handling over 2.8 million TEUs, an 11.4% increase from the same period last year.
In December 2024, the Port of Savannah processed more than 442,000 TEUs, a 4.7% rise compared to December 2023. The Appalachian Regional Port also contributed to the growth, with a 13.5% increase in TEUs for the fiscal year-to-date and a 20.6% boost in December alone.
We’ve seen twelve consecutive months of year-over-year container volume growth and we’re on track for a strong fiscal year that ends June 30th, 2025,
… said Griff Lynch, President and CEO of Georgia Ports Authority.
Several infrastructure projects are underway to support continued growth. The Garden City West Terminal’s cars in containers project will complete in February 2025, shifting cargo to RoRo service at the Port of Brunswick.
Four new ship-to-shore cranes arrived in January 2025, and the Blue Ridge Connector, a new inland port in Gainesville, is set to open in 2026. Additionally, a $40 million expanded U.S. Customs inspection facility is set to open in March 2025 at the Garden City Terminal. The Savannah Container Terminal is currently in the permitting stage.
At the Port of Brunswick, GPA handled 443,763 units of Ro/Ro cargo, a 7.5% increase for fiscal year-to-date 2025. However, December RoRo cargo saw a 7% decrease.
The port saw $262 million in improvements in 2024, adding new warehousing and RoRo storage. Construction on a new railyard is ongoing, and a fourth RoRo berth is in the engineering phase.
In bulk cargo, East River Terminal & Lanier Dock saw a 44.9% increase in tonnage, driven by higher exports of wood and peanut pellets.
