On 28 January, a Greek-flagged tanker was boarded by two armed individuals while transiting eastbound through the Singapore Strait.
The attack took place approximately 2.7 nautical miles northwest of Pemping Island, Indonesia, according to maritime security firm Ambrey. The pirates, armed with knives, targeted the vessel during the incident. This boarding is adding to a growing number of piracy incidents in the region.
A similar attack occured on 7 January, when four armed individuals boarded a bulk carrier traveling through the Philip Channel in the Singapore Strait, also wielding knives.
In light of such incidents, ReCAAP ISC has previously urged ship masters and crews transiting the area to remain vigilant and report any incidents immediately to the Operation Centres of the Philippines and the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) of Malaysia.
