India’s Ministry of Shipping has announced that country’s 12 major ports will be installed with a 82.64 MW of utility-scale solar power infrastructure. This plan is part of the India’s government Green Port Initiative strategy launched earlier this year which aims for ‘cleaner and greener’ airports through the use of renewables technology.
The financing required for the development of the plants will be arranged by the ports from their own resources, with no contribution from the government.
The scheme would also offset the cost of buying power from the grid and would help to meet the Renewable Energy Purchase Obligation (RPO), set up by the government which mandates a certain percentage of renewables into the total
The ports of Vizag, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and New Mangalore have already set up a capacity of 6.84MW and an additional 16MW is in the pipeline for March of next year.
Singapore’s Jurong Port in collaboration with Sunseap Leasing has already set up the installation of a 9.5MW solar capacity on its warehouse rooftop, making it the largest port-based solar facility in the world.
The renewable energy projects are expected to be completed by 2017.
