Taking place between the 10th-11th May in Hamburg, the Motorship 39th Propulsion & Emissions Conference, entitled ‘Future proofing your fleet’, offered a detailed insight into the latest developments within engine and propeller design, as well as maintenance.
The packed two-day programme featured technical presentations, case studies and panel discussions, as well as interaction with the speakers directly though the P&E App.
The highlight of the conference was the opening panel featuring Mitsui OSK Lines (Kenta Arai), Hapag-Lloyd (Wolfram Guntermann), Maersk Line (Ole Graa Jakobsen) and Carnival Corp (Tom Strang). Collectively representing a total of 1,900 vessels, this panel focused on their response to environmental regulatory issues, including SOx, NOx and CO2 emissions reduction, as well as ballast water treatment.
Furthermore, the keynote addresses on the conderence were given by Stefan Micallef, Director, Marine Environment Division, IMO, and Ole Graa Jakobsen, Vice President, Head of Fleet Technology, Fleet Management & Technology, Maersk Line. The addresses set the context of discussions early, with Mr Micallef describing the IMO as “a catalyst for more efficient ships” and noted how the organisation needed to continue to evolve in the face of accelerating technical and social change.
Mr Jakobsen highlighted the efforts of the world’s biggest ship owner to make its fleet more efficient, emphasising a new focus on connected shipping and revealing some crucial elements of its emissions reduction strategy. Mr Jakobsen went further on to revealed that Maersk Line will aim to burn low-sulphur fuel rather than using scrubbers to comply with the IMO’s global sulphur cap after 2020.
The 40th Propulsion & Emissions conference will return to Hamburg, Germany from the 9-10th May 2018.
