On 13 April, a fire broke out aboard a coal-carrying vessel which had recently left Nacala port near Nampula, Mozambique, resulting in four injuries.
The incident, involving the vessel Altzek used for transporting dry bulk cargoes bound for Poland, caused four minor injuries. The Maritime Transport Regulatory Authority (Itransmar) stated that it is assumed that there was an explosion in the engine room resulting in the fire breaking out but it’s a fact that has yet to be ascertained.
Four tugboats with fire-fighting equipment from CFM-Logistic and Corredor Logístico Norte responded to the scene, but fortunately the fire had already been extinguished by the vessel’s crew.
“The four crew members (…) are out of danger and are currently undergoing treatment at a clinic in Nacala,” the Authority added.
According to Itransmar, a team of naval engineers will carry out a technical assessment of the ship to determine whether it can continue its the journey.
