Greece’s most recent winter storm dubbed Hephaestion disrupting shipping operations, resulted to a ferry running on the rocks of a small island in Skiathos harbor in the Aegean sea, as the harsh winds and challenging waves made the vessel hard-to-navigate.
Specifically, the ferry “Proteus” was sailing in the northwest Aegean Sea in the afternoon of Sunday, January 5.
Yet, because of the challenging weather conditions, the vessel hit the rocks of a small island “Daskalonisi” in Skiathos Harbour, shortly after departing from Skiathos island and heading towards Skopelos island. It was also reported that except the weather conditions, the vessel also suffered engine failure, while the stern of the ferry was stuck, leading to the ferry colliding.
Meanwhile, to assist with the situation a tourist boat came to the rescue, transmitting all passengers onboard the ferry safely to the harbour.
Following, from a first investigation the authorities of Skiathos island, along with divers reported that the ship’s hull has been breached, but there were no passengers injured.
