A crew member of the ferry Pathagon lost his life on April 28, in Punta Arenas, as a result of a line-handling accident. The crew member was handling a cable for docking when he got trapped in the line.
Local media reported that one of his arms became got entangled in an unspecified deck equipment. The ferry sent out a distress call, while emergency services personnel rushed to the scene.
However, despite all efforts, the crew member died.
Because of the accident, Tabsa, the vessel’s operator, suspended service on the line until further notice. The company did not provide any further information, saying that it is waiting for the finalization of the procedures established by law.
In addition, traffic heading to Porvenir was temporarily diverted to Tabsa’s Punta Delgada terminal.
Homicide detectives also conducted an investigation to find the cause of the crew’s death, concluding that the fatality was an industrial accident.
