The CMA CGM Group received the CMA CGM Mermaid, the first of 10 eco-friendly container ships powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).
These vessels feature LNG-powered MAN engines, can carry biogas, and are convertible to e-methane. A fuel cell, set for the last ship, will enable zero emissions when berthed, with onboard alternators enhancing efficiency.
Determined to optimize energy efficiency, CMA CGM resized this new ship series, emphasizing a ratio of 204.29 m length to 29.6 m width for improved hydrodynamic and aerodynamic performance. These are the first CMA CGM ships with front superstructures, ensuring better aerodynamics and higher loading capacity than conventional designs.
Additionally, the 10 container ships will have alternators coupled to the main propulsion engine, providing energy for onboard electrical installations at sea.
Collaboration with Chantiers de l’Atlantique, Odense Marine Technique (OMT), Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD), and GTT aimed to create a fleet with up to -20% CO2 emissions compared to conventional ships.
Scheduled for delivery between February 2024 and January 2025, the vessels will primarily serve Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, offering an energy-efficient alternative to road transport.
Between April and July, six of the series will join the Intra-Northern-Europe line to serve the Baltic and Scandinavian ports from the hubs of Hamburg and Bremerhaven. Four other ships will join the Intra-Mediterranean line between the end of September and the end of November.
