On the occasion of the World Environment Day, CMA CGM shipping group announced that, in 2016, has succeeded in reducing its carbon emissions per container transported by 4%, in line with its 2025 targets, by improving the performance of its ships, in the fight against global warming.
In addition, the group targets to reduce its CO2 emissions per container transported by 30% between 2015 and 2025, while it had already reduced its CO2 emissions per container transported per kilometer by 50% between 2005 and 2015.
Some of the key achievements for this goal were the operational optimization of the fleet, the technological innovations, such as the bulbous bows that improve the ships’ hydrodynamics, the efficient technology-equipped vessels and the launch of the eco-container program that makes containers friendlier with the environment, according to the company.
Additionally, the CMA CGM Group offers “Carbon Footprint” and “Ecocalculator”, that calculate carbon emission per shipment, enabling them to update the footprint onto their own balance sheets.
Improved performance in the years ahead is expected to come through the application of new technologies, including the use of alternative fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), the company informed.
CMA CGM has been rewarded for its transparency in the fight against climate change by the Carbon Disclosure Project in 2015 with the grade of 92/100, which was renewed in 2016. Except for this, it is also an active member of Clean Cargo and an adhering member to the “blue charter” of Armateurs de France, two initiatives seeking to encourage good practices in the maritime sector.
