SAFETY4SEA is pleased to announce the SAFETY4SEA Crew Welfare Survey, including Wellness & Wellbeing elements, as an industry initiative to assess status, provide feedback to all industry stakeholders and identify a roadmap to improve on welfare issues at an organizational and industry level. This will be the 2nd Crew Welfare Survey, following a similar initiative conducted within Q4 of 2019.
The COVID-19 has marked a new chapter in the nature of seafarers’ work. This pandemic, which has been challenging for the whole world, has also pushed seafarers to their limits as they are working hard and with extended contracts in order to keep trade flowing. Now, more than ever, seafarers need to be designated as key workers to ensure priority vaccination and access to safe transit and travel and thus, the whole industry has shed its attention to seafarers; happiness, well-being and prosperity or in other words their welfare.
As seafarers play a vital role for a safer and sustainable shipping, the topic of Crew Welfare is now more topical than ever. With that in mind, we are pleased to announce the SAFETY4SEA Crew Welfare Survey, scheduled to run within Q2 & Q3 of 2021, with preliminary results being released on an ongoing basis and final reports by the end of the year.
With the 2021 survey, we will be building further to the Crew Welfare Index (CWI), launched in 2019, and assess how welfare issues are perceived and implemented onboard, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey is anonymous and will be conducted via an online landing page with questionnaire requiring less than ten minutes to complete by seafarers sailing with the ships and those currently ashore.
This is by far the largest survey of its kind with a participation target of 5K ships and 100K seafarers which aims to provide a full picture with structured feedback of COVID-19 impact on the crew.
