Turkey has decided to ban the use of open-loop scrubbers in its territorial waters. As the Turkish Chamber of Shipping reports, the discharge washwater from scrubbers into the sea will be banned.
According to information, Turkey may fine ships with open-loop scrubbers in case the samples collected from the overboard discharge are suspected to be pollutant.
As a result, vessels using an open-loop scrubber will have to use compliant fuels when entering Turkey.
Turkey has now joined an increasing list of countries banning open-loop scrubbers, including China, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and many European ports and regions.
What is more, during 2020 the European Parliament suggested Europe to reduce the use of open-loop scrubbers, as well as restrict the discharge of scrubber wastewater.
