A collision between two cargo ships was reported amid particularly heavy winds, in the morning hours of Wednesday in the anchoring area of the Greek Port of Piraeus.
According to local media reports, the Greek-flagged Ro-Ro cargo ship ‘Capetan Christos’ was sailing in the area coming from the island of Paros and heading to Elefsina, when she hit the Portuguese-flagged container ship “Stadt Dresden”, which was anchored. The winds were 7 Beaufort strong at that time.
At the time of the collision, ‘Capetan Christos’ was carrying nine crewmen, eleven truck-drivers and eleven freight wagons onboard, while the ‘Stadt Dresden’ had 21 crew members and a load of containers, according to the Hellenic Coast Guard.
There was no injury or marine pollution as a result from the incident, but some damage to ships was reported. The vessels were not allowed to depart until submission of relevant confirmatory airworthiness.
This is the second ship crash incident in Piraeus in less than two days, following the slight collision on Monday evening between the ferry ‘Blue Horizon’ and the ‘Blue Galaxy’.
Meanwhile, all ship sailings have been forbidden Wednesday morning from the port of Piraeus, Laurio, and Rafina to the Aegean islands, due to the strong winds that are hitting the Greek coast from the evening hours of Tuesday.
