Wuhan Innovation Jianghai Transportation, a Chinese shipowner, has placed an order for sixteen methanol-fueled coastal freighters with Jiangsu Qinfeng Shipbuilding.
As informed, these vessels will have a capacity of approximately 15,000-20,000 deadweight tons (dwt) and will operate solely on methanol, utilizing a domestically designed methanol-only engine that produces 1-2 megawatts of power.
Furthermore, the vessels utilize a direct injection technology that allows for over 90% methanol replacement and significantly reduces emissions, cutting nitrogen oxides by 60% and sulfur oxides by 99%.
In 2016, the company began research and development on new energy vessels, including LNG and methanol. The company’s 13,800-ton LNG-ready ships, 15,500-ton vessels, and 130-meter LNG dual-fuel vessels were among the first in the country to utilize new energy fuels.
The construction of these vessels aligns with the Chinese government’s push for cleaner shipping technologies and reflects Wuhan Innovation’s commitment to developing environmentally sustainable solutions.
