The European Commission did not propose a ban on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) due to member states raising concerns about first securing alternatives.
In its latest sanctions package, the European Commission did not suggest the implementation of a ban on Russian liquefied natural gas amid concerns from member states about first securing alternative supplies, including from the United States.
“First you have to have a deal because otherwise you will be left without gas from Russia and without the U.S.” one of the diplomats told Reuters.
In June 2024, the European Union banned transshipments of Russian LNG in a further package of restrictions on Russia imposed over its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Furthermore, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his desire for the EU to buy more LNG from the United States and stated that he would make more available.
However, it is unclear when the EU could secure more U.S. LNG in the short term as exports are already at full capacity.
