The European Union agreed on 19 February to impose new sanctions on Russia targeting Russia’s shadow fleet and aluminium imports.
EU officials have released an initial outline of a 16th package of sanctions against Russia. The new sanctions include a ban on imports of Russian primary aluminium, a proposal previously discussed but never approved due to concerns from some member states about its economic impact.
As reported, in addition to the aluminium import ban the sanctions expand the blacklist to target tankers in Russia’s shadow fleet which the Kremlin uses to bypass Western restrictions on oil trade.
The EU is clamping down even harder on circumvention by targeting more vessels in Putin’s shadow fleet and imposing new import and export bans.
