ABS launched the ABS Global Sustainability Centre aiming to help maritime transition to a sustainable, lower emissions industry. The Centre plans include leading an industry education program, seminars and lectures, designed to raise awareness of maritime sustainability technologies and carbon reduction strategies.
Mainly, the Centre brings together industry leading ABS sustainability projects focusing on the decarbonization of shipping, including:
- Studying the viability of alternative fuels and new energy sources in different shipping sectors;
- Analyzing de-carbonization pathways, the impact of seaborne trade growth and IMO targets on new designs;
- Using digital technology to simplify transactions and increase operational efficiency;
- Certifying, verifying and validating new technology.
Moreover, the Centre is located in Singapore, is led by Gurinder Singh, ABS Director of Global Sustainability, and includes a team of professionals with diverse backgrounds and expertise, supported by the worldwide ABS organization.
ABS Chairman, President and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki reported that the decarbonization of shipping is a crucial matter and is a challenge that will make the industry look for new technologies.
He continued that the decarbonization is an opportunity to change to a more sustainable global economy, that will consist of an efficient, low-carbon transportation.
To facilitate the journey toward decarbonization targets, ABS established its Global Sustainability Centre to coordinate initiatives that advance innovation and technology development focused on safety, practicality and the commercial viability of proposed solutions.
In the meantime, Gurinder Singh, ABS Director of Global Sustainability stated that the newly built Centre will play an important role in helping the industry manage the transition safely.
