In this video, cadet officer Nur Fitri Chang Hui Mei and Captain Roch Brandon Charles, on why they chose a professional life out at sea.
According to Hui Mei, during the course of her study, they studied various subjects, including metereology, cargo operations, principles of navigation, and she “instantly fell in love with the industry.”
However, she noted that friends and family are necessary to overcome the challenges of this career.
As for Captain Charles, he said that:
When the time came for me to step onboard a cargo vessel i realized that a lot of things are involved in planning the safe operation of a vessel
He also added that the passion for teaching came during his seafaring years, as one of his key roles onboard the ship was to carry out regular trainings for ship officers and crew.
When i stepped ashore, i realized that this is a sector in which i can use my knowledge and to groom the future Singaporean seafarers
In addition, Captain Charles believes that being disciplined and self motivated ensures that seafarers are carrying out your work onboard the ship.
This is important because seafarers face different types of challenges and the more positive they are it is easier to address these challenges.
My advice is to have a passion for maritime industry, as this will make sure you are always dedicated to excel
As for Hui Mei’s advice, it is to “have an open mind and remember that no matter how tough a day is, the sun will always rise.”
Tough times do not last, tough people do
