In an effort to decarbonize shipping, Mediterranean Shipping Company and Shell focused on some of the challenges faced by hard-to-decarbonise sectors, such as the long asset lifespans, high energy dependency and complexity of electrification.
Namely, Bud Darr, Executive Vice President, Maritime Policy and Government Affairs at MSC Group and Melissa Williams, Vice President, Marine, Sectors and Decarbonisation Shell, outlined some of shipping’s decarbonisation pathways to help the industry achieve its net-zero emissions ambition.
“At MSC we are passionate about building a path to sustainable and decarbonized shipping. The biggest challenge that we face right now is that we do not have available the required alternative fuels and the technologies that are necessary to do this at the scale that we need them”.

In addition, it was noted that the challenge of decarbonisation is particularly difficult in number of sectors including shipping. Long asset lifespans, high energy dependency and complexity of electrification are some of the challenges faced by hard-to-decarbonise sectors.
These challenges cannot be solved alone, it requires strong collaboration across industries and governments; and there is no single solution.
As explained there are between 60-100 ships out there with various shapes and sized that need to decarbonize over time. However, for the industry to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, it is required global collaboration.

In light of the decarbonization issue, the oil major Shell set out details of how it will achieve the target to accelerate its transformation into a provider of net-zero emissions services.
Specifically, the announcement came as Shell unveils a reshaped organization aimed at ‘Powering Progress’ in the three business pillars of Growth, Transition and Upstream: generating shareholder value, achieving net-zero emissions, powering lives and respecting nature.
