On January 1, 2025, the ship Haigang Zhiyuan successfully completed a 3,000-ton methanol bunkering operation for the Ane Maersk at Yangshan Port, marking the first such operation of the year and the start of regular methanol bunkering services at the port.
This operation was notable as the Haigang Zhiyuan is Shanghai Port’s first methanol bunkering vessel, which has a capacity of 16,000 cubic meters. The bunkering process, conducted while the Ane Maersk was simultaneously undergoing container operations, highlights the efficiency and sustainability of methanol as a low-emission marine fuel.
As part of its commitment to sustainable shipping, Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) aims to expand its green methanol bunkering capacity to 1 million metric tons by 2030, as part of its broader goal to increase LNG and methanol bunkering capabilities.
The successful bunkering operation follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between SIPG and Maersk signed in 2023, which laid the groundwork for regular methanol fuel operations at Shanghai Port.
With future operations planned for January, the port is poised to continue its development as a key hub for green marine fuels, reinforcing Shanghai’s position as a leading global maritime and fuel center.
