A maneuvering accident led to a chain reaction collision at the Algerian port of Bejaia on the evening of December 5.
According to sources the accident was possibly caused by an electrical failure or another mechanical issue.
At least one person working on the dock was injured, while three ships were damaged, with neighbors reporting a loud noise that shook their homes.
The Liberian-flagged container ship Vega Sigma, had started to maneuver to leave, when the vessel lost control. Unable to stop its maneuver, the container ship hit a second container ship which was docked at the time. Due to the impact, the second containership hit a third vessel, which was also on the dock.
What is more, a 64-ton crane truck unloading containers from the Atlantic North fell over on the dock, with its boom hitting the container ship. The crane operator was taken to the hospital.
