The US Coast Guard (USCG) extends the administrative grace period for renewing a merchant mariner credential (MMC) to up to 6 years after its expiration without requiring a complete original examination.
However, other credentialing renewal requirements remain unchanged, and in some cases, an open book examination may still be necessary. According to USCG, mariners who previously applied for MMC renewal after the 1-year grace period expired can now reapply if they are within the new, extended grace period. They will need to submit a new application and pay the required fees as per 46 CFR 10.219.
If mariners have a current approval to test letter from the National Maritime Center (NMC) to reinstate an MMC expired beyond the 1-year grace period but within 6 years, they should contact the NMC.
This policy letter is effective as of April 25 2024 and will continue indefinitely. The Coast Guard will issue further guidance as needed.
