Africa Marine Services (Europe) Limited issued an update on local penalties for stowaways arriving in Ghanaian ports.
The latest situation is that there are now two penalties being applied by two separate authorities:
- Ghana Ports & Harbours Authority charge of USD 5000.00 per head.
- Ghana Immigration Authority Fine which is USD 5000.00 per head but is normally negotiable.
In theory, the situation in Ghana would mean that vessels arriving at Ghanaian ports with stowaways on board could incur a total of USD 10,000.00, per stowaway, in fines. This does not include disembarkation and repatriation costs.
Ensure that detailed stowaway searches are carried out when a vessel is leaving any African port and if in any situation stowaways are discovered on board, prior to a scheduled call at a Ghanian port.
