The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) recovered the bodies of three crew members who were trapped inside the engine room of the offshore supply ship ‘Greatship Rohini’ which caught fire on February 13.
The bodies were found during a search operation conducted by 19 persons, including eight crew members of Greatship Rohini and 11 members from ICG.
The ship was 92 nautical miles off Mumbai coast when the fire errupted. A total of 18 crew members were on-board at the time, while the fire started in the engine room.
One officer sustained burn injuries and was evacuated in a chopper and shifted to a hospital. He is now out of danger and recovering in the hospital.
When the ICG operation centre received information about the fire, an offshore patrol vessel was deployed to provide help.
In the meantime, an aircraft was launched to assess the situation. In addition, several other boats were involved in rescue and cooling operations.
The majority of the fire was tackled until the evening of the same day, but because of heat it kept reigniting.
When the fire was tackled completely, the coast guard and company’s staff members boarded the vessel to resume searching for missing crew members. The search was focused on the tween deck area, finding the bodies of three seafarers.
