During the UK Chamber of Shipping Annual Dinner on 3 February 2020, Maritime Minister Nusrat Ghani discussed about the opportunities that 2020 will bring in the shipping sector. Namely, Nusrat Ghani believes that this year will be the start of the maritime revolution.
As we have worked together it’s clear to me that we still have much more to do. I believe in 2020 we can drive even more positive change.

One of the UK’s goal during this year is to become the world’s best-performing flag and move towards by modernizing flag service.
Through this action, the region will offer better and responsive customer service, supported by a global network of MCA surveyors and smart data which will reduce the risk of detentions.
Moreover, fiscal advances are also expected, so as to provide a much more competitive financial proposition to the maritime industry in global.
So we’re really looking forward to hosting a Green Finance Forum, and of course the Global Maritime Forum in London later this year. Hugely important events for the industry as we modernise and become greener, cleaner and more transparent.

Through setting new standards, creating rules and regulations, UK aims to shape the evolution of international regulations through the IMO.
At the same time, autonomous shipping testing and development is part of the regions’ goals, while in that effort will collaborate with the Maritime Autonomy Regulation Lab, led by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
Speaking of the increased tensions in the Middle East, safety issues were discussed as well. Facing those threats, UK recently published a cyber security guidance.
In case you weren’t aware, as threats to shipping evolve, just last week I was pleased to publish new cyber security guidance. And I visited Southampton University to see their continued investment in maritime cyber security testing, which they plan to roll out as the exemplar of shipping cyber security.
…Nusrat Ghani marked.
In light of the safety situation, the International Maritime Security Construct will continue offering its security services to commercial shipping in the Gulf, while the Ministry of Defence and Department for Transport will further review the threats and give its advise to shipping on a daily basis.
This is the year where we really deliver our long-term vision for maritime. The start of a fresh era for shipping in this country, built on innovation, enterprise and ambition.
