On the occasion of this year’s International Women's Day, SAFETY4SEA focuses on a very specific aspect of sex discrimination: Women in leadership roles. The participation of more women in leadership roles is a major field of the global fight to equality.

The Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA) launched its inclusion pledge. The pledge addresses the under-representation of women in the maritime industry via a series of statements to adopt diversity through individual action and personal responsibility. WISTA International President Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou, said that diversity and inclusion are necessary in today’s global and competitive marketplace.

In line with the global focus on enhancing the role of women in the maritime and shipping sector, the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dakuku Peterside, announced the Agency’s readiness to support initiatives aimed at getting more African women involved in the industry.

Once again this year’s agenda was full with meetings, agreements and important announcements for the maritime community. In this photo recap we have picked key moments that captivated industry’s interest in 2018.

In a ceremony during Malta Maritime Summit, government representatives gathered with WISTA members to celebrate the first five Maltese female master mariners. Minister of Transport Ian Borg stressed that it becomes important to work hard and to reflect on how empowering women can be made possible.

Women leaders from across the maritime business sectors will gather at the 2018 Sustainable Ocean Summit, at Hong Kong, from 14 to 16 November, in a high-level plenary discussion to advance women’s leadership in Corporate Ocean Responsibility.

Ana Paula Vitorino, Portugal’s Minister of the Sea at Portugal Shipping, announced the launch of WISTA Portugal, joining 44 other National WISTA Associations. The aim of the Portuguese NWA is to be a partner, for the promotion of Portugal’s “Blue Economy”. 

The German arm of the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association, WISTA Germany e.V, based in Hamburg, elected a new board of directors at the beginning of July, and for the first time a representative of Carnival Maritime, Cindy Paarmann, has taken a place on the board.

IMO's governing body, the IMO Council, approved the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association International's application for consultative status on 5 July 2018. WISTA will use its consultative status to promote diversity and enhance women's empowerment. Currently, women seafarers constitute only 2% of the total number of seafarers worldwide.

WISTA announced the formation of its Diversity Committee, a member-driven project to focus on providing practical solutions to increase opportunities for gender diversity in the maritime industry. The committee works as part of WISTA International's 2018 theme: The Women Who Move the World.
