On the occasion of COP 25, CMA CGM announced its participation in the United Nations Global Compact, highlighting its position on environmental protection and its role in the industry's energy transition. CMA CGM will lead the path towards the shipping industry's goals concerning the environment and will enable the Group to commit to trade focusing more on the respect of human rights, climate and the environment. 

Following on the heels of the first ever IPCC Special Report on the impact of climate breakdown on the ocean, State Parties at the COP 25 Conference currently underway in Madrid must finally recognize the ocean within both their commitments and action, said One Ocean representing ocean NGOs from around the world. 

The 25th UN Climate Change Conference (COP 25) opened on 2 December, in Madrid, aiming to take the next crucial steps in the UN climate change process. Following agreement on guidelines of Paris Agreement at COP 24 in Poland, a key objective is to complete several matters with respect to the full operationalization of the Paris Agreement.

A revised draft text of an agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) concerning the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction has been made available on Wednesday, November 27, 2019.

Thirty companies and institutional investors have signed up to the UN Global Compact Sustainable Ocean Principles committing to take action in order to secure a healthy and productive ocean. The principles provide a foundation for companies to engage in ocean sustainability in light of the upcoming UN Ocean Conference in June 2020 in Lisbon, Portugal, and beyond.

Chairman, Ship Owners Forum, Mrs. Margaret Orakwusi, bemoaned the issue of illegal fishing on Nigerian waters, saying appropriate measures must be applied to stop this for the interest of the shipping industry.  

Human Rights At Sea proposes amendments to the draft agreement under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction to include International Human Rights Law.

In the closing of the Climate Action Summit in New York, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres applauded the progress made in the shipping industry in the battle against climate crisis, commenting it as a 'huge step', and highlighted IMO's 2050 target in reducing the GHG emissions by 50% by 2050.
