The World Economic Forum published the "Global Risks Report 2019", highlighting the top risks that we can expect in the future. In terms of likelihood, environmental and cyber issues complete the top five. As for technology, it will continue to play a key role in the global risks landscape.

In 2018, ReCAAP ISC started using Data Analytics to provide a deeper analysis of incidents based on the data it gathered in the last 12 years from 2007-2018. The report provides insights for incidents reported in the whole of Asia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, South China Sea and Straits of Malacca and Singapore.

Transparency, such as publishing details of fishing licences, must be improved to eradicate illegal fishing and prevent the collapse of Ghana’s fishing industry, according to a new report by the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) and Hen Mpoano, under the EU-funded Far Dwuma Nkɔdo project.

To deal with this issue, OCIMF released a new information paper, Deck Cargo Management Onboard Offshore Vessels. A French study started in 2017 by the Cerema, CITEPA and INERIS, reports that air pollution from ship traffic in the Mediterranean Sea can significantly be reduced, because of the introduction of an Emission Control Area . According to the study, an ECA would lead to economic, health and environmental cost-benefits in the Mediterranean Sea. 

According to BIMCO’s Dry Bulk Terminals Vetting Report 2018, the best performing port is Szczecin in Poland. The report gathered data from 144 ships covering 381 terminals. 97% of the reports were rated as average or better, giving an average rating of 3.6 out of five.

Transport Accident Investigation Commission issued a report on the February 2017 accident in Port Chalmers, Dunedin, on board the passenger cruise ship Emerald Princess, in which a nitrogen cylinder burst, resulted to one fatality. The report highlights a lack of global minimum standards for inspection, testing and rejecting pressure cylinders for stored energy systems on lifeboat launching installations – a system common on cruise ships.

Allianz issued its Risk Barometer 2019 listing the top business risks for this year. For the 2019 edition, Allianz surveyed more than 2,415 risk experts from 86 countries about the perils that worry them most. The survey identified cyber, neck-and-neck with business interruption, at the top of the Allianz Risk Barometer for the first time.

On 15 January the International Transport Workers’ Federation and the World Maritime University published a flagship report called 'Transport 2040: Automation Technology Employment - the Future of Work'. The report analyzes how the global transport industry will change because of automation and advanced technologies.
