Shell Shipping & Maritime and the University of Southampton  launched the Centre for Maritime Futures which will unite university and industry partners to transform the energy shipping industry to be safer, cleaner and more efficient.

During an IMO workshop in Viña del Mar, Chile, September 30 - October 2, participants discussed the challenges on the effective ratification and implementation of MARPOL Annex VI and the initial IMO strategy on reduction of GHG emissions from ships.

During an ABS event at the London International Shipping Week in early September, experts highlighted that the shipping industry needs to develop new maritime technologies that will assist in meeting its targets towards decarbonization by 2050.

MOL and Oshima Shipbuilding have jointly obtained 'Approval In Principle (AIP)' from ClassNK for the design of a hard sail system. The system converts wind energy to propulsive force with telescopic hard sail. As MOL said, the system is crucial for the 'Wind Challenger Project', which MOL and Oshima Shipbuilding are leading.

Maritime New Zealand informs that from January 1, 2020, New Zealand flagged vessels that will visit foreign ports of states in line with MARPOL Annex VI - Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships will have to be compliant with two new requirements. 

BIMCO submitted a proposal to the IMO that aims to help curb emissions by regulating ships’ power, rather than focusing on raw speed limits, and presents a way to cut emissions based on the average performance of each ship type trading at target operational speeds for the past three years.

As the IMO 2020 sulphur cap is nearing, shipping companies are taking their measures to comply with the regulation. However, a solution might be the use of crude oil. Namely, such an oil requires blending, but no refining, before being used as a ship fuel, while they could also be used with little modification. These fuels could prove to be low in sulphur and not too flammable.

DNV GL and Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), aiming to cooperate on the development of low and zero carbon ship technology. The project will include additional study on LNG as a ship fuel, as well as an assessment on its potential as a transitional step to zero-carbon options.

Jon Anders Ryste, Senior Consultant, Environment Advisory, DNV GL presents a recent study, whose ambition is to assess the commercial and operational viability of alternative marine fuels. The study analyzed six fuels, having LNG as its base for comparison.
