Holland Renewable Energy Technologies, based at the RDM site in Rotterdam’s port area has offered an alternative for the port; by using its system to convert all the gas flared around the world into electricity, the company claims it could provide every household in a country the size of Germany or France with free power.

Cyberattacks occur on a daily basis. A major cybersecurity incident occurred at the Port of Rotterdam on 2 November 2016. Fortunately, it was a drill designed to train managers how to respond when a cyberattack cripples critical computer systems.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority is making efforts to develop every possible initiative that could contribute to the transition to a CO2 neutral economy. The Port Authority believes that the Netherlands needs a wide range of different technologies and measures and a lot of research and experimentation is still needed to determine the optimal path to a CO2 neutral economy by 2050.

The Port of Rotterdam has announced that in 2017, the port tariffs paid by sea-going vessels in the port will increase by 0.3%. This is equivalent to half the rate of inflation over the past year. The adjustment is in line with the three-year agreement made by Deltalinqs, VRC, VNPI and the Port of Rotterdam Authority regarding the development of Rotterdam’s port tariffs.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority has announced that it has signed a joint venture agreement with the Indonesian state-owned port corporation Pelindo 1. The main purpose of this joint venture is to prepare the development of the port of Kuala Tanjung, located on the Strait of Malacca.

In the near future, the Ecodelta – a futuristic, LNG-powered dredging vessel currently being built at the Barkmeijer shipyard in Friesland – can be found working in the port of Rotterdam. The ship is a key component of the new contract entered into by Bagger- & Aannemingsmaatschappij Van der Kamp and the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

Sustainable electricity is to become increasingly important for the Port of Rotterdam in the coming decades. The Minister Kamp of Economic Affairs in late October announced that cable connection will be realised by grid manager TenneT between wind farm ‘Hollandse Kust (south)’ and the Maasvlakte and transported to the national high-voltage grid via Rotterdam.

The new hydrocracker, arrived in Rotterdam on October 25, will be separating heavier products into cleaner, higher-grade end products such as base oils for lubricants and ultra-low-sulphur diesel fuel.

Compared to the excellent first three quarters of 2015 (+5.4%), cargo throughput in the same period this year fell by 1.9% for the Port of Rotterdam. The decrease was particularly strong in coal and iron ore.
