The Port of Rotterdam Authority launched the first version of its new digital application "Pronto". The application wants to achieve a more effective utilisation of capacity at the port terminals, and a precise planning and coordination of bunkering, servicing and maintenance and provisioning. It also contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions in the port.

The top-level consultations in the inland container shipping sector concluded to a number of results. These results show that shippers, forwarders, barge operators, inland terminals, deep sea terminals and shipping companies take the congestion issues in the port of Rotterdam seriously and want to make a joint effort to resolve them.

The Port of Rotterdam will use a new digital technology will help ships arriving to the Port, in their port planning. This technology aims to assist vessels adjust speed as the actors exchange planned arrival time automatically. Namely, Sea Traffic Management, STM, and Port of Rotterdam have established electronic exchange of arrival times between ships and port.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority called the Dutch Government to create a coalition with countries in North-West Europe, so that a joint CO2 price can be introduced. The Port Authority also announced an incentive of in total 5 million euros for vessel operators experimenting with low-carbon or zero-carbon fuels.

Interest groups, port authorities and private companies have jointly adopted standards for nautical port information. This development is very important for optimising port calls. The standards review which system is referred to for water depths and how to communicate admission policies and vessel’s arrival and departure times in the ports.

The Nieuwe Waterweg, the canal between Rotterdam and the North Sea, was opened in 1872. The waterway will be deepened over a length of 25 kilometres, from Hoek van Holland to the Benelux tunnel, including the connecting Botlek port. After the deepening, ships with a draught of up to 15 metres, will be able to sail into the Botlek port.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority started the construction of the infrastructure for the Container Exchange Route (CER). The CER will link the deepsea container terminals, empty depots, rail terminals and distribution companies at Maasvlakte.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority awarded consortium SaVe the contract to construct the substructure for the Theemsweg route. The re-routing of part of the Port railway line aims to increase freight train traffic. This will improve the railway connection between the western port area and the hinterland.

Terminal operator OBA will clear part of its coal-handling site this year in order to maker room for other dry-bulk commodities. This decision is driven by the reduced demand for coal storage. The two partners agreed for OBA to clear more than 20% of its site to accommodate new operations, starting in the first quarter of 2018.

The Port of Rotterdam’s top priorities are still safety and ensuring that processes in the port area run efficiently. No major nautical incidents occurred in the port during 2017, and even though the number of ship movements increased, the number of minor incidents was lower than in previous years.
