10 people on board the cruise ship Norwegian Joy were treated by paramedics on Sunday, December 1, after reporting minor medical complaints, marking the second time within a period of one week that passengers from the vessel had to be treated for illness after returning from a trip.

On Sunday 27 October, the U.S. Coast Guard rescued a 44-year old man from the TUI cruises ship called "Mein Schiff" at a position about 20 nautical miles east of Atlantic City, in order to receive medical care. For the time being, the crewmember's health condition remains unknown.

IMO has agreed to develop a new medical guide for ships, jointly with ILO. The main objective would be to produce a practical up-to-date ships medical guide to assist those required to give medical assistance who are primarily not medics. 

Two kayakers were rescued by HM Coastguard helicopter after their kayak capsized on the 1st of November on the River Spey, near Inshriach. The Coastguard winchman was lowered down to the kayaker and placed him to a more accessible location on the other side of the river along with the female kayaker. Both kayakers were able to walk to the ambulance where they were warmed and treated for cold.

In Corpus Christi, Texas, two men from Matagorda Island were lifted up from the Coast Guard, in Thursday morning, after their sailing vessel ran aground because of losing its mast. A helicopter aircrew landed and helped the two men to emergency medical services experts at Port Lavaca Airport. Both the owner and the crewmember are in stable condition.

The Filipino Supreme Court dismissed a seafarer’s claim for disability benefits under POEA, as the seafarer failed to report to the company-designated physician. The Standard Club noted this is a welcome judgement for shipowners who can take confidence from the Court’s willingness to uphold the exact terms of POEA contracts.

Maritime New Zealand is reminding the 7,200 seafarers who have ring-fenced their ‘tickets’ they need a medical certificate to keep working. The medical certificate is due two years from the date a seafarer verification card was issued. Maritime NZ ring-fenced over 10,000 legacy seafarer certificates by 1 September 2017.

For a better heart heald, people working at sea and all people as well, coming from all ages, are advised being physically active, managing conditions such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and depression, managing their weight and avoiding social isolation.

Denmark introduced new regulation, aiming to simplify the handling of medical supplies for survival craft and the handling of medicine onboard Danish ships abroad. Upon the new regulations become effective on 1 July 2018, the requirement for ships’ medicine to be bought from a Danish pharmacy will be abolished.
