The US Coast Guard has made available a draft Navigation and Inspection Circular, asking ship operators to assess their vulnerabilities to cyber attacks. As highlighted in the USCG Cyber Strategy, cyber security is one of the most serious economic and national security challenges in the US.

Danish shipping giant Maersk said that it expects its container operations to get back to normal early next week, after the recent cyber attack that affected its shipments. The company informed this week that it had restored its major IT systems, but the import experience has not yet been fully brought up to normal.

Maersk Supply Service has secured a long-term contract with Subtec S.A de C.V. of Mexico, a subsidiary of Blue Marine Group, for one of its Stingray new-building vessels. In this way, the company enters the Mexican market for the first time.

IContainers has warned that the ocean freight industries are insufficiently prepared for cyber attacks. According to the company, last week's ransomware attack on Maersk should serve as a warning of the increasing vulnerabilities of the industry, as it moves towards automation and digitalization.

Maersk continues to keep updated its members regarding the restore of its operations following the Petya malware attack that hit its system this week. So far, Maersk has reestablished business in Algeciras, Tangier, Callao Lima, Mumbai, Itajai and Buenos Aires.

Following the recent cyber attack, the Mediterranean Shipping Company confirmed that it is not affected by the ransomware, known as ‘PETYA’, reassuring all operators that its systems and business operations are working normally and bookings can be placed as usual.

The Indian Ministry of Shipping and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust are taking steps to ensure minimum disturbance to trade, transporters, public, in response of the recent "Petya" cyber attack across the globe. An unforeseen situation has been developed at JNPT, owing to disruption in the operations of one of the private terminal operators, APM Maersk, due to the cyber attack.

A.P. Møller-Maersk officially announced that its IT systems are currently out of work due to a cyber attack. The company issued a statement, posted on its twitter account, confirming the incident and that while the situation is under review, the safety of its employees, operations and customers' business comes first.

According to data from the Alphaliner, the biggest container shipping company by number of chartered and owned ships in its fleet is Denmark- based APM-Maersk, with currently 636 ships in service. The second largest fleet is run by MSC. The top-five is completed by France-based CMA-CGM, Chinese COSCO and German-Chilean Hapag-Lloyd.

Maersk Line announced the launch of the “Remote Container Management” system, aiming to ease operators' access on information about the reefer’s current location, temperature and atmospheric conditions inside, as well as the power status, at all times and no matter where it may be in the world.
