A new report commissioned by trade promotion body Maritime London has set out 36 detailed recommendations to grow the UK’s $6bn – marine insurance, ship broking, legal, finance and classification industries. The report comes in support of the UK Government’s Maritime 2050 Strategy.

During the London International Shipping Week (LISW), the Department of Transport (DfT) and ABP's Port of Southampton launched UK's first Port Economic Partnership (PEP), an initiative to create stronger links between ports and Government, to maximise long-term trade and economic growth.

The UK Department for Transport bought a new ship for the General Lighthouse Authority to enhance safety in domestic waters. The vessel – which is yet to be named – is expected to replace the ageing THV Patricia that has been in service since 1982.

UK maritime sector reports strong growth with an increase of 12.7% in turnover, 6.6% in GVA and 3.9% in employment over a five-year period, according to a recent report for Maritime UK. The report also shows that the sector contributes nearly £40 billion to the UK economy.

Encouraging more women into seafaring careers will help UK improve its skills base, especially amid general technological progress in the industry, said the UK’s shipping minister, John Hayes CBE MP, noting he is “determined that we can and must do more” to get women into careers at sea.

As vessels become more and more autonomous, consideration has to be given to the human element of future vessel operations, according to David Patraiko FNI, Director of Projects at The Nautical Institute.
