Proper and timely liquid cargo sampling is one of the most important tasks for the crew members on vessels to prevent cargo contamination and exposure to relevant claims. On January 2, 2015, the Bahamas-flagged bulk carrier ‘Bulk Jupiter’ sank off Vietnam taking the lives of 18 crew members. Although the accident could not be officially attributed to cargo liquefaction, it opened discussions on the hazards associated with the carriage of bauxite.

Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency announced that they are halting the search and rescue operations for the missing Indonesia-flagged Nur Allya. The vessel disappeared in late July. According to the authorities, the operations stopped on September 9.

Search and rescue operations are underway for the Indonesian-flagged bulk carrier 'Nur Allya', which has been missing along with its 25 crew members, after sending a distress signal in waters off eastern Indonesia on Sunday. The ship was carrying nickel ore to Southeast Sulawesi province.

The first training pack focuses on the Can Test, the IMSBC complementary test for bulk cargoes, to address suspected bulk cargo liquefaction, which has claimed lives of an estimated 112 seafarers since 2007. 

Intercargo welcomes the latest amendment to IMSBC Code 04-17 which entered into force on 1st January 2019 and includes important updates related to cargoes that may liquefy. In this regard, the association notes that moisture related cargo failure mechanisms, widely known as liquefaction, continue to be a major concern for dry bulk shipping.
