Following the decision of the United States to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, the European Community Shipowners' Associations and the International Chamber of Shipping encourage the intention of the European Union and the People's Republic of China to intensify cooperation in achieving a global climate deal for shipping.

On Tuesday 6 June, at the United Nations Ocean Conference (5-9 June) in New York, the International Chamber of Shipping will explain that the global shipping industry is fully committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goal for the protection of the Ocean.

IBIA issued a statement regarding the continuous pressure that is growing on the IMO, to deliver specific commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, with proposals set by the ICS and other shipping organisations.

Ahead of the ICS Annual General Meeting in Istanbul next week, the International Chamber of Shipping has launched its latest Annual Review, providing the key issues affecting shipping and an insight into the complex legislative and economic landscape currently faced by ship operators.

According to a Republic of the Marshall Islands' marine safety advisory, ICS reported to its members that invoices have been received from the Provincial Government of Zambales, Philippines, seeking payment of a “Provincial Coastwatch Environmental Monitoring System User Fee” from managed vessels passing through the territorial waters of the Province of Zambales.

The BWMC enters into force and takes effect on 8 September 2017. Under the Convention, ships trading in international waters will need to ensure they are fitted with a ship-specific Ballast Water Management System, according to the agreed implementation schedule, Mr. Peter Hinchliffe, Secretary General, ICS says. To spur greater trust in ballast water systems, the ICS has also been collaborating with the IMO to ensure a more rigorous type approval process exists.
