The government's climate advisers commented on Tuesday, September 24, that the aviation and shipping sectors should properly included in Britain's target to limit its greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, according to Reuters. 

The UN Climate Action Summit which took place in New York City on the September 23, enabled worldwide leaders to present their proposals and solutions for the ongoing battle against climate change, whereas IMO's Sec-Gen focused on the progress made in tackling climate change. 

The World Shipping Council (WSC) announced its plans to propose to IMO the launch of an international research and development entity that would identify a new generation of marine fuels, in attempts to solve the GHG emissions issue.

BIMCO’s newly elected president, Turkish shipowner Sadan Kaptanoglu, aims to gather as many as possible shipowners to find a way to protect the environment, discussing the 2020 sulphur cap, the 2050 targets on reducing the GHG emissions and plastic debris. 

SEA\LNG published the results of a new alternative fuels study, finding that LNG is the most mature, scalable, and commercially viable alternative fuel currently available for the maritime industry. The study was conducted by DNV GL. The study concluded that while there are several lower or zero carbon alternative fuels that could assist in complying with IMO 2030 and 2050 GHG reduction targets.

During the London International Shipping Week, IMO's Secretary-General, Kitack Lim, highlighted the need make zero-emission ships more commercially attractive, adding that the 2050 GHG goals can not be achieved by only using fossil fuels.

As part of its Energy Transition Outlook 2019, DNV GL provided an independent outlook on the maritime energy future examining how the energy transition will affect the industry. The report forecasts that new fuels, alongside energy efficiency, will play a key role on meeting the IMO greenhouse gas ambitions.

The Port of Long Beach reported dramatic reductions in air pollution, including an 87% cut in diesel emissions, according to the port's latest annual emissions inventory. This follows a series of aggressive actions by the Port to curtail pollution over the last years.

Activists from Greenpeace Germany peacefully protested the import of soya from destroyed forest and savanna regions in Brazil, expected to be carried on the cargo ship “Hiroshima Star” in the Lower Weser river of Germany. The large-scale cultivation of soya plays a major role in emissions, the NGO noted. 

The Korean register launched a greenhouse gas online data management system called 'KR GEARs' (GHG Emission Authentic Reporting System) to assist shipowners be in compliance with the GHG regulations imposed in the shipping industry.
