Asahi Tanker and partner Exeno-Yamamizu Corporation Tokyo have developed the new domestic shipping tanker design which incorporates zero emission electric propulsion. The commercial model development of the 'e5' design is currently ongoing for all bunker supply vessels that are trading in Tokyo Bay. The target of the first vessel launching is planned for the fourth quarter of 2020.

On December 25, 2018, classification society ClassNK announced a partial revision of 'Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships' in order to upgrade the rules to include the latest developments and requirements of the shipping industry. 

Japanese classification society ClassNK announced the signing of a partnership agreement with German service provider TÜV Rheinland to collaborate in jointly developing and delivering a cyber security certification scheme for the maritime industry, in order to further ensure the safety of vessels.
