Organizations and companies from the shipping, bunkering and refining industry wrote an open letter to Dr Sian Prior of the Clean Arctic Alliance (CAA), in response to the claims that shipping’s use of IMO 2020-compliant very flow sulphur fuel oils (VLSFOs) could increase black carbon emissions, coming from vessels.

The classification society Korean Register recently issued a technical information "Forecasting the Alternative Marine Fuel – Ammonia", based on the use of ammonia as an alternative marine fuel. KR claims that has great potentials in comparison to other different types of carbon-neutral alternative fuels.

The Clean Arctic Alliance has called the IMO to support an immediate switch to distillate fuels for ships in the Arctic and develop a global rule prohibiting fuels with high Black Carbon emissions, after a study revealing that some of the new VLSFOs will actually lead to a surge in the emissions of Black Carbon. 

Although the liquefied natural gas is in the top list of shipping’s best alternative to high sulphur fuel oil, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has entered into the shipping industry and aims to accommodate itself in the marine fuel market.

The sale of HSFO heavily declined while low-sulphur fuels skyrocketed in the final quarter of 2019, as the industry transitioned into compliance with 2020 sulphur cap. Reuters reports that global supplies of marine fuel compliant with the new environmental rules are increasing fast as concerns over quality remain marginal. Despite initial concerns about availability of very low-sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) late last year, the preferred compliant marine fuel supplies at key hubs now seem adequate, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). What is more, concerns that the VLSFO, which is a blend of high-sulphur and low-sulphur fuel, could damage engines are now less prominent.

MISC Berhad, Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), Lloyd’s Register (LR) and MAN Energy Solutions announced a collaboration to jointly launch a project (JDP) for an ammonia-fuelled tanker to support shipping’s drive towards a decarbonized future.
